The Hardened Conscience
The Hardened Conscience
Pray that God will give you a conscience that is not hardened. When God forgives you of your sins, your conscience is able to sense what is right and wrong. God puts a conscience in every person. Every time that person sins, his conscience gets a little harder until one day he does not feel bad about sin at all, he just goes on doing wrong without any feeling of guilt.     That is why it is important to confess your sins daily and ask for forgiveness (1 John 1:9). When the Bible speaks of someone having a hardened heart, this means that his conscience is hardened. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit." When a Christian becomes sensitive to sin, his heart will be broken when he sins, and he cannot wait to go to God and ask for forgiveness! Always remember that Christ Jesus went to the cross and suffered and died to
pay for our sins. Each time we sin, we pile another one on Him. To be contrite means to be sorrowful for offending God. Psalm 51:10 is a great prayer: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." Only God can keep your heart clean; only God can renew your spirit. When your heart is right with God, it will bother you to be around sin. It will bother you to hear others take God's name invain and to talk about sinful things. God will not protect you from hearing these things because we live in a wicked world that is full of sin, but God will give you a distaste for these things so that you will not want to be a part of them. God will also give you a love in your heart for those around you who sin, because you know that God will do the same thing for them that He did for you. It will definitely give you
something to pray about, for we are to pray for the lost people that we know.
In John 13:21, we have the account of Jesus being troubled in His spirit when He thought about the disciple that would betray Him. It broke His heart that one who had been with him for three years and had heard His teachings and saw His miracles would turn from Him and betray Him. Let us not trouble the heart of our Lord by deliberately sinning against Him. Let us not betray Him by turning away from His teachings recorded in His Word and ignoring all the good things He has done for us. Let us love Him with all our heart, our soul, and our mind. Let us pray for a softened conscience.
